I’ve done NaNoWriMo for 4 years in a row, while also hosting Thanksgiving for all my orphaned friends each year. I easily write beyond the daily recommended word count of 1,667 words, averaging about 2,500 each day. This allows me to take breaks when I need to. I’ve easily exceeded 50,000 words each year, days before Thanksgiving hits, so I can still enjoy the holiday with my friends.

Admittedly, this isn’t possible for everyone, especially those juggling day jobs and families. I am childfree and semi-retired, so I can focus a lot more time on my writing than other writers. That’s my secret to being able to do NaNoWriMo without sacrificing Thanksgiving!
